Ranking The Beatles: Abbey Road (Beatles Week 2016 Day 3)

Ranking The Beatles: Abbey Road (Beatles Week 2016 Day 3)

Please see my introduction and explanation about this project here.

At times I absolutely love Abbey Road as one of my favorite Beatles albums, and other times I simply can’t listen to it. Interestingly, Abbey Road was recorded after the sessions for Let It Be, but released ahead of what would be the film’s soundtrack. While not their final release, Abbey Road is The Beatles final album. Every song here, unlike Let It Be, is well done and complete.

Presented in order from least to most favorite, in a highly subjective (and subject to change) manner:

“Come Together”
This is the only song on the album I don’t really care for
“Something”
A beautiful song overshadowed by everything else
“You Never Give Me Your Money”
This feels like an examination of the Lennon/McCartney relationship
“Mean Mr. Mustard”
A fun tune
“Sun King”
A bit dreamy
“Golden Slumbers”
I like how it builds
“I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”
A heavy song, and an odd jam that doesn’t feel out of place
“Because”
A beautiful song
“Oh! Darling”
Feels like something that could have been recorded for Rubber Soul or Revolver
“Here Comes The Sun”
What’s not to like?
“Polythene Pam”
I like how uncharacteristically Beatles this is
“She Came In Through The Bathroom Window”
And this one
“Octopus’s Garden”
I love the playfulness of this song
“Carry That Weight”
Adulthood approaches
“The End”
The sentiment speaks for itself and some days it ranks higher
“Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”
Simply a fun humorous song
“Her Majesty”
Another all-time favorite that I like more and more as the years go by

If, however, you take the side 2 medley (and I count “Because” along with it) the ranking would go like this:

“Come Together”

“Something”

“I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”

“Oh! Darling”

“Here Comes The Sun”

“Octopus’s Garden”

“Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”

Meddley

Because/You Never Give Me Your Money/Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard/Polythene Pam/She Came In Through The Bathroom Window/Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End
