Paying The Ferry Man

Sometimes a vacation can consist solely of a ferry ride. The crossing from Edmonds (about 10 miles north of our house) and Kingston, on the other side of the Puget Sound, takes about 30 minutes. This isn’t a long crossing, but enough for the kids to get out and explore a bit. With adult supervision of course.

While I took August, Déla and Ciárán up to explore the ferry, Laura stayed in the van and nursed Xavier a bit. There were two passenger decks on this particular ferry, and we went back and forth on both levels. I made sure to have the kids (and myself) visit the restroom as well.

Particularly enjoyable was the outside section when we approached the Kingston ferry dock. Looking over the edge into the water August spotted jellyfish. This alone was worth the trip and a great way to start a vacation. Jellyfish happen to be one of the creatures that August is most fascinated with. Then I spotted a jellyfish as well. Then another. Both August and I were seeing jellyfish, which was quite fun, and pointing them out to Déla and Ciárán.

From our vantage point, which was rather high up, we watched the ferry approach the dock then as it connected with the dock (I know there’s a term for this but I can’t find it) we headed down to the van. Then we were off, through Kingston and on to the Olympic Peninsula for our vacation.
