Day 20 – A Song To Listen To When You’re Angry
“Monkey Wrench” – Foo Fighters
I usually don’t listen to music when I’m angry. Even then, I get mad, and it passes. I usually don’t stay mad long.
However, there are several songs that allow me to tap into that anger if I need to. These aren’t songs that get me pumped up, but actually allow me to tap into my emotional pool to recreate that feeling if necessary. “Monkey Wrench” is one of those songs.
I’ve always been a Foo Fighters fan, even before the group came out with its first album (which is essentially Dave Grohl by himself in the studio). I was well aware that after Nirvana was disbanded in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s death that the drummer was looking for a musical output. Being part of the Seattle music scene at the time myself, I heard some things, knew people who heard other things, etc. it actually wasn’t until I was on the other side of the world, actually, in Warsaw, that I heard the full album as it was released. Yeah, that’s right, I bought Foo Fighters debut album in Poland. It was a great trip, but that’s another story.
So I like the first album, but it was the second, the first as a true full band, where the sound gelled. A number of classic tracks are present on that album, and “Monkey Wrench” is one of them. To this day the song remains one of my favorites the band has.
