Day 21 – A Song To Listen To When You Are Happy
“Song 2” – Blur
Well, this was odd. I’m not necessarily a melancholy guy, and most of the music I listen to is upbeat. I never think “I’m in a good mood, and this is the music to go along with that.” I do, however, have a number of songs that help “enhance” a good mood, or lift my spirits.
“Song 2” by Blur is one of those.
It’s a ridiculous piece of hard rock fluff by a band that doesn’t normally do that type of song. I liked the band, enjoying earlier singles such as “Park Life” “Girls & Boys” “Country House” and “She’s So High” (though I never had an album by the band). Then I saw the video for “Song 2” on MTV and was blown away. I didn’t recognize the band, not realizing right away that this was the same Blur that generated those very British style alt-pop songs. I rushed out, picked up the album, and became a fan.
What is it about this song? Part of it is just how silly it is. The lyrics aren’t really sensible. I also really enjoy the dichotomy of the quiet and loud parts of the song, even though they are telegraphed far in advance. And suddenly the song is over. It’s short.
