What Goes On
BeatleSongs attributes most of the authorship to John, with equal help from Paul and Ringo, though it would be a while before Starr would actually get a credit on an album. Tell Me Why mentions how it sounds like a cover they style of which Ringo had been singing on the previous albums.
Ringo getting writing credit is something that is relatively new. That didn’t happen until later, actually, as the pressings of the albums I have only credit the song as Lennon/McCartney. Actually for years I thought this was a Carl Perkins song, the group does a great job of emulating that style so well here.
The song is about a guy whose girlfriend doesn’t treat him well. I have the opposite experience. My wife let me travel across the country for three days to see a concert. She is home with all the kids. I don’t have any issues with my female of choice.
And this isn’t the first time she has let me do this. You may remember when she let me go to Japan for a concert.
I’m a lucky guy.
