Yet Another Tragedy

I had a completely different post set up for today, but in light of today’s events, I felt the need to comment.  Earlier today another school shooting took place. Children as young as Kindergarten were murdered.

What I do want to say first is my heart and prayers go out to all affected. Not just those that lost a friend or loved one, but also, and particularly, the youngest who will be affected by this for years to come. There is no way to make sense of this for them.

There are two issues as I see it. The first is mental health care. I will not take this on.

Gun control may be a bad term for many, but hear me out for a minute.

According to many who defend the NRA and its position on this issue, particularly pundits and politicians, there is the second amendment to the United States Constitution that allows for the right to bear arms. This is also the same document that did not prevent states from allowing everybody to vote. Many states only allowed for white land-owning men to vote. The United States Constitution also did not prohibit slavery.

Things change over the course of time. Our views as a society over what is acceptable with regards to freedom (slavery) and voting are different now than when this country formed. Shouldn’t we also take a moment at least to consider the evolution of what our founding fathers intended with the Second Amendment?
