Beatles Week is a wonderful tradition I look forward to every year. I wish I could claim to have come up with the idea, but it was Mark Zwolanek who started it back in…. what … 2008? He hoped somebody else would also do the same thing, and I did starting in 2009. It’s a fun way to wrap up the year.
The idea is to take a week’s worth of blog posts and center them around a Beatles heading. Since within the Beatles world a week lasts eight days (for the song “Eight Days A Week”) there are to be eight blog posts. Counting Christmas and New Year’s Day, there’s eight days to occupy (December 25 through January 1 is eight days, inclusive).
For the first year I picked random Beatles songs and either based my blog post to fit the title or found a song title that fit the blog post. The second year I decided to go with a theme, and picked U.S. non-canon albums (since the catalog has been aligned to the original UK releases). Last year I picked songs Ringo sang as a theme. This year I have another theme, songs written by George Harrison.
The Beatles have enough albums and songs there are a number of themes that can be considered. Here is a partial list I present, mostly as a form for me to take notes for future weeks:
Songs that haven’t officially been released
Films (?)
E.P. titles
B-sides
Cover songs
Songs covered by others
Songs written by Beatles for others
