Think For Yourself was initially released on Rubber Soul, both original UK and butchered US versions.
Tell Me Why mentions the “fuzz bass adds just the right guttural cynicism” but doesn’t really give the song itself high praise. BeatleSongs quotes Harrison as saying the song “…must be about ‘somebody’ from the sound of it – but all this time later I don’t recall Who inspired that rune! Probably the government!”
Last night I watched an interesting documentary How The Beatles Rocked The Kremlin by director Leslie Woodhead. Less about the Beatles, but more the social impact the group had behind the iron curtain where any culture not officially sanctioned by the government was outlawed.
The case was made in this documentary Beatles music opened the social consciousness of young Soviets, providing an outlet for them to galvanize their questioning of authority and what it was saying about the outside world. This in turn would inform their opinions later in life and ultimately lead to the downfall of the Soviet Union.
I don’t believe the band had quite that much of a political impact, but its cultural impact cannot be denied.
If you’re a fan of the Beatles, I suggest checking it out if you can. It’s just under an hour and paints an interesting look at the impact the band still has around the world.
