Of Hats And Fans

I’m getting ready for the upcoming weekend by going to Value Village (a local thrift store chain) and looking to get some winter boots for August. I’m taking him to a 2 day Cub Scout winter camp and we don’t have much in the way of proper winter gear.

I bring this up for two reasons. The first is that I’m going to be missing Mariners Fan Fest by attending this Cub Scout event. Both August and I are rather bummed about this. I had been toying with the notion of going for the last few years, and last year wanted to but something conflicted (and I can’t remember what at this point).

Last year after having missed Mariners Fan Fest I was determined to make it to the next one. Cub Scout winter camp dates were announced and signups initiated before I knew the dates for Mariners Fan Fest. Oh well, getting out and doing this with my son is probably more important, and hopefully NEXT year we can make it.

Anyway – so I’m at Value Village with Xavier and Ciaran (since the other two were in school) getting a couple of things when we came to their hat section. I didn’t think anything of it at first, but Ciárán pointed out the Seahawks cap. Impulsively I decided to search through them to see if a Mariners cap was in the mix. August and Déla already have official Mariners caps, so I was looking for myself.

I did find a Mariners cap, but it was too small for me. Ciárán then said he wanted. it. I pointed out that he already has a cap for the Everett Aquasox, but he countered that he was embarrassed to wear it to Mariners games because it wasn’t an actual Mariners cap. It is hard to argue with that logic. Since it was only $1.99, I picked it up for him.

Since I was already halfway through the rack I decided to go ahead and finish searching through it. I found another hat from last year’s Irish Heritage Day. This was a day I had hoped to go to because the giveaway was a pretty cool hat. I considered picking it up, but since I wasn’t there for that game, I decided I would pass. It just didn’t feel right.

mariners hadTowards the end of the rack, however, I did find a Mariners cap. It fit me, and it was only $1.99. It’s just a generic team hat, but it will do until I get something nicer or more special – hopefully there will be a good hat in the giveaways this year, and the beard cap doesn’t count.

While it doesn’t replace the cap that I won and then had stolen, it will do for now. It’s nice to have all of us having Mariners caps to wear to Safeco Field as we cheer on our team this season.
