An Inconvenient Convenience

I understand the appeal of Self Check Out at the grocery store. I’m not against it, but I’m also not necessarily for it.

When I have a cart full of groceries, and my kids in tow, I’d much rather wait in line for a regular checker than go through the hell that is self check out. Don’t come up to me and tell me there are self check out machines open. I saw them. I specifically went past them to come into this line Mr. Helpful Grocery Store Employee.

My 2 year old, if he isn’t strapped into the cart, will wander off. If he is strapped in, he complains, reaches around and attempts to “help” by grabbing at anything and everything. The other kids wander around or perhaps try to load more than 1 thing at a time onto the scanner. That is, if they aren’t busy fighting among themselves or wandering off to look at what impulse buy items they can try to convince me to purchase that are in the other isle.

If I am by myself and have just a few items, I’ll certainly head through the Self Check Out lane to save myself some time.

Why don’t I normally go through Self Check Out? This morning I was at the store, getting a total of 5 or 6 items. With one checker working (it was only about 8:40 in the morning) and two people with full carts, I figured it would be quicker to “buck up” and head through Self Check Out.

I was wrong.

Xavier kept running off. Do you know the looks you get when you are trying to scan and bag your items while restraining a toddler? Then there’s the 5 year old who is alternately trying to “help” or wander off.

No thank you. I’ll continue going through the regular checkout line from now on.
