Sundays

Sunday mornings were very different years ago. I was struck by this recently as my 2 (soon to be 3) year old came running in to bring me a piece of paper.

Years, no – decades, ago, Sundays were for sleeping in and sleeping off. I would wake at some late hour on Sunday, usually around 11a.m. or so, after staying out until 2 or 3 in the morning, usually a live band was involved. Sometimes it would even be me that was directly involved, either hosting the show or performing.

So I’d wake up in the apartment, put on the coffee, and start making a massive plate of “hangover helper” – frying up some potatoes, maybe some sausage, and a massive omelet filled with whatever I had handy (olives, mushrooms, cheese, salsa, etc.). I’d sit there, probably watching “Star Trek”, eating my meal, and plod along with my morning.

Now…

I’m up at 6 if I’ve slept in. A late night these days means watching the evening news – the early broadcast. Sundays I don’t fix myself a large breakfast, I’m helping the kids get their breakfast as they wake up (which is usually cereal). Instead of watching “Star Trek” I’m online going through emails and printing out coupons to use at the grocery store.

Sundays are very different from what they were over 20 years ago.
