Marvel Knights: Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk DVD

marv knights ult wolv v hulkHulk has thrown Wolverine’s legs 4 miles up a mountain. That’s how Marvel Knights – Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk begins. Flash back to Logan being recruited by Nick Fury to track down the presumed dead Hulk. Bruce Banner as the Hulk killed a large number of people in New York City, and the man behind the monster was found guilty and executed. Then a number of incidents that could only be explained by a still living Hulk has a few people on edge.

An interesting take on these characters, and it should be noted these are from the Ultimate Marvel universe, so this story and its characters are not part of the regular Marvel canon.

What we get is the story of Hulk being hunted down to be killed by Wolverine. At times, however, the time shifts back and forth, so there’s not actually a lot of build-up to the big fight as that’s not actually the climax of the story. We learn how She Hulk comes to be (at least in the Marvel Ultimate universe) and see perhaps the softer side of Wolverine – at least for a moment.

As for the titular bout, it doesn’t last long and it’s not much of a spoiler to say Hulk wins. Then again, that fight just isn’t necessarily the focus here. As the story moves back and forth in time we learn a little about Betty Ross’ relationship with Banner, how far Wolverine will go to finish a job he feels necessary, a couple of different takes on revenge, and a lot more.

Using time in a non-linear fashion to tell a story isn’t anything to the story’s writer Damon Lindelof. As co-creator of television’s “Lost” there has always been a major element of time displacement with his work.

As with all the other motion comics the full credits play at the beginning and end of each episode. This really does interrupt the flow of the storytelling as well as just being annoying. As for the motion itself, the technology has come a long way and we get a nearly fully animated representation of the six issue comic mini-series. The voice acting is decent ant it is what is done to the original comic panels that is the main attraction here.

The only special feature is a very short retrospective featurette looking back on this limited comic series. I didn’t get much out of it. Still, fans of Hulk and Wolverine as well as the Marvel Universe should check this out.
