Illness Bait And Switch

I had just put Xavier down for nap when the phone rang. It was the school. Déla was in the office not feeling well.

So I did what any good dad would do, I got Xavier up from nap and walked over to the school to pick up my daughter. Thankfully we live about a block and a half away.

Her symptoms weren’t too pronounced, more of a general “tummy” thing. We figured if she was coming home in the middle of the day and would miss the first Girl Scout meeting of the year (which was right after school) then this was more than simply faking it or whatever.

I called a friend and she came over to watch the kids while I picked up August and Ciárán (as well as her kid) from school. The rest of the afternoon and evening went as expected with dinner, bath and bedtime routines functioning as normal. Déla didn’t protest going to bed, and even went a little early. She wasn’t feeling as bad as she was at lunchtime, but definitely still under the weather. It was looking like she might be well enough to go back to school in the morning though.

Want to guess which kid showed up in our bedroom at one in the morning saying they threw up in their bed?

If you said Xavier, you’d be right.

Since Xavier shares a room with August not only did I have to clean Xavier and his bed, but also do so quietly so as to not wake the elder brother. Bed stripped and remade I got Xavier back in by about 1:30 or so. Of course since he was up he didn’t go back to sleep right away. It was a while before either of us got back to sleep.

This morning I slept through my alarms, woke up Laura late for work, and somehow got Ciárán and August off to school. Unfortunately my friend from yesterday isn’t available so I’ll have to traipse Xavier and Déla to the school to pick up their siblings.
