The 300 Spartans (Blu-ray)

300 spartans 62 bluThe 300 was a decent action movie that was based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel. What most people don’t realize is that Frank Miller was directly influenced by the 1962 film The 300 Spartans. This is less of an action film and more of a historical “sword and sandals” style epic.

There aren’t a lot of big name stars that most people will recognize, so it’s a matter of whether or not the story and production values hold up – and they do. The first half of the film concerns itself with the buildup and events leading up to The Battle Of Thermopylae (and yes, I looked it up for the spelling). Instead of focusing on just one narrative we have the perspective of a couple of Greek leaders as well as a soldier providing a bit of romantic sub-plot.

As the film passes the one hour mark we only get a small skirmish. There’s an awful lot of talking in The 300 Spartans, which might put most people off. I’m not sure how historically accurate this film or that other one are, but there are some big differences and not just with the story. What I really liked about The 300 Spartans was its location shooting. While it was physically impossible to shoot on the actual site of the ancient battle, the filmmakers came close, literally. Instead of computer generated imagery we get real scenery with hundreds of costumed extras. Instead of a stylized retelling of the story we are getting a sort of reenactment.

The two armies don’t face off against each other until an hour and fifteen minutes into the one hour and fifty five minute running time. When it finally does happen it’s a spectacle. Sure it’s not as grand as some of the other historical epics, but for 1962, and even today it’s an impressive feat to watch.

No special features on the Blu-ray other than a couple of trailers and TV spots. That’s a big disappointment and a missed opportunity. I’m sure there was somebody around who would have given some historical perspective for cheap. Oh well.
