Music Monday: The Thing That Only Eats Hippies

I have posted about The Dead Milkmen before, and while I’d like to go into more detail about my enjoyment of the band I don’t have a heck of a lot of time today. So instead I’m going to post this video of the song that introduced me to the band. Airing on MTV in 1986 if ever so briefly, “The Thing That Only Eats Hippies” was the first true single from the band. Coming off the group’s second album it wouldn’t generate a lot of attention. Maybe it’s the goofy nature of the band, possibly the raw sound, but whatever the reason The Dead Milkmen never really saw much success (outside of “Punk Rock Girl” from their 4th album). A cult band to be sure, but one that I almost immediately took a liking to. It’s not that I have anything against hippies, but this was just, well, funny. It wasn’t until the band’s third album and subsequent single that I really took notice. I remembered the earlier video and began to seek out their albums. I remember being in the record shop with a friend who picked up the first album while I picked up the newly released third album. I’ve been a fan ever since. While that first video didn’t give me the impetus to actually go and seek out the band in record stores, it did lay the groundwork for me to eventually do so. Here it is. From 1986. And boy, does it look like it.
