Originally by Little Richard this song was covered by several other artists including The Kinks before The Beatles released it in 1964. The lead track off the Long Tall Sally E.P. then eventually on the Past Masters compilation which gathers the various non-album tracks. In the United States it was released as the B-side to the single “Matchbox” and then the Capitol release The Beatles Second Album.
Tell Me Why says that Paul’s vocals on this song, along with a couple of other early Beatles tracks, help establish the band’s “rock and roll stance that rivals that of any of their heroes.” BeatleSongs tells us it was recorded in one take, as you might expect from a cover that was a staple from their Hamburg days.
Alright, so I’m not posting about the original meaning and intent of the song. Instead this is about my daughter and her long hair.
That long hair is gone.
Déla had been growing her hair for years. Years!
We have a guy who will come to our house and cut the kids’ hair. Usually I will get my hair buzzed, the boys will get haircuts and Déla will get a little trim, usually just the split ends or just neatening it up. She had been talking about wanting to get it cut, and I mean really cut for some time. Then when the time came for her to get her hair trimmed, we all sort of mutually agreed to go ahead and do it.
We double checked, even triple checked. Was this what she wanted? Was she really ready to go through with it?
She was.
While it may not be as short as many of her friends, it’s quite short considering what she used to have. It was a bit of a shock, admittedly, she wasn’t sure if she should laugh or cry, but ultimately she is very happy with the result.
What happened to her long hair?
It has been almost a week and we’re all still getting used to it.
