I will freely admit to “Mr. Moonlight” being one of my least favorite Beatles tracks. Recorded for the band’s fourth album it feels very much like filler. Credited to Roy Lee Johnson, the Beatles performed the song for a while – appearing on the Live At The Star Club album (the version I prefer to the one on Beatles For Sale). BeatleSongs tells us the song was recorded on two separate occasions, in August and October of 1964 – the latter of which was because the original takes were unsatisfactory. Tell Me Why says this choice of song “shows just how fanatic they were about obscurities.”
The day after Christmas we had tickets to do the Holiday Duck Tour. There was a Groupon for half price tickets so we snagged them up thinking this would be a fun family outing.
Unfortunately after we booked the time we realized it would have been cheaper to simply get one pair of the Groupon tickets and purchase regular price children tickets. Still, we were looking forward to a family outing, something we don’t really get to do much of.
As we are loading up the van to go, Déla kicks Ciárán in the middle.
Now, I’m sure it wasn’t something that happened out of the blue and that he was participatory in whatever events took place that preceded that incident. The thing is, we caught her in the act.
She would be missing out. This meant one of us had to stay behind. We don’t have a regular babysitter, or even an irregular babysitter, especially not one we can call at the last minute. Laura elected to stay, over my objections, because she said she wasn’t feeling 100% anyway. This bothered me because I took the kids 3 years ago while Laura stayed home with Xavier so she missed out and this would mean she would be missing out again.
Off I went with Ciárán, Xavier and August.
In the van on the way down Ciárán said he didn’t want to go. Not only that but he started acting out. The problem was it was too late. If I turned back to drop him off with Laura August and Xavier would miss out because we would completely miss our ticketed time. I decided to go ahead on, despite Ciárán’s admittance that he was deliberately trying to sabotage the evening.
Parking was surprisingly easy and we got in line at the ticket kiosk to pick up our tickets. I said that we had two people not coming so we only needed four of the six. Honestly, I was hoping for a refund, but didn’t expect one. I was handed all the tickets without any acknowledgement of our situation. Oh well.
We waited in line, boarded, and then the driver handed out silly things for the passengers. August got a hat that lit up. Ciárán wanted none of such nonsense.
It was as if he was determined to not have a good time.
Of course the driver was whacky – that’s sort of the whole point. If you have never taken one of these types of tours I highly recommend it. While we didn’t go in the water there was still plenty of lights to see downtown. The pictures didn’t come out nearly as well as I would have liked because I only had my phone and we were constantly moving.
At the end of it Ciárán admitted to “kind of” enjoying it.
