Am I the only one who remembers this band?
And fondly?
The video for “Breakaway” hit MTV and it was different – not necessarily visually, but musically, and I liked it. A lot. The massive amounts of percussion appealed to me – similar to the way Stomp or Blue Man Group would later appeal to me.
I picked up the album, Bonk, because I was interested in hearing more from the band that featured more drummers than guitarists. I wasn’t disappointed. Reading the liner notes I learned the band didn’t even have a guitarist.
Essentially Big Pig were an alt-rock version of Taiko drumming. And I was okay with that.
The novelty of the band garnered it a bit of success getting featured in a couple of movies and television series, but the second album, You Lucky People, went nowhere.
Of course I have it. I think I was one of only about 20 people that knows of its existence let alone owns a copy. It’s a shame, really, because I think had they shown up on the scene a few years later the audience would have been ready for them. I don’t know if I want to say Big Pig was ahead of its time, but they were underappreciated and greatly underrated.
