I became familiar with Steve McQueen through his role in The Great Escape during one of the many times it was broadcast on television (remember the days when networks would air movies?). That iconic motorcycle jump is one of the more indelible images of film history. He is a captivating presence on screen and at a young age I knew this was an icon. As I grew older and watching more films on my own and particularly with action films one name kept coming up – Steve McQueen.
Shout Factory now has a great documentary looking at the life and career of Steve McQueen. From an early age he was dangerous, living a life that many would not assume for him – he was on the path to being behind bars or destitute but he took his life into his own hands and went into an acting path. This would lead to his first wife, small roles, then ultimately his breakout role in The Blob which led directly to the television series “Wanted Dead Or Alive”. From there it was only upwards for him.
This is perhaps the best look at Steve McQueen’s life, career, and acting process – all due to the people involved. Narrated by Robert Downey Jr. we have interviewees include Pierce Brosnan and Gary Oldman, director Norman Jewison and family members including former wives. This documentary is equal parts celebration and biography, a great look at the man and actor.
Special features are pretty scant. They are essentially culled from the main documentary itself. First up is 20 minutes looking at Steve McQueen’s vehicular collection. Then there is 5 minutes focusing on Yucatan, a film project McQueen tried to get made.
While it may not be for everybody, I Am Steve McQueen is a fascinating look at one of film’s coolest characters.
