How To Train Your Dragon was a hit film based on a book series, and like most films it took a different path with its storytelling. Diverging from the source material is not new, but the way this franchise has taken off and continued its story is a bit novel. Pun not intended. Not only has there been a film sequel, but a television series that is set between the two films. Then there was a sequel series to that, all before the second film was released. Now a year after the second film we are getting a new television series, exclusively through Netflix. “Dragons: Race To The Edge” debuts June 26 and will feature 13 episodes that will lead up to the events in How To Train Your Dragon 2.
If you remember how the film sequel opens, Hiccup has a map he pieced together to explore the wider world. “Dragons: Race To The Edge” shows how some of those pieces came to be. I am assuming it is partly due to the Dragon Eye, an artifact Hiccup discovers that helps him discover how much more there is outside of the the village and island where Hiccup and his clan live.
Jay Baruchel reprises his role at Hiccup, along with a few other series regulars from the films and television series’. This series looks to fill in the final chapter between the first and second films, and should satiate fans, tiding them over until the next film comes out in a couple of years. With 13 episodes becoming available June 26 we will get some of the answers to questions raised in the second film, such as when and how Hiccup upgraded his prosthetic leg and the other upgrades to Toothless.
Of course with this new series we are getting new characters and new dragons. One of these new dragons is the Razorwhip, which has the ability to not just breath fire but to also have a telescoping tail to whip around. It appears to be metal plated as well making it all the tougher to defeat. Then there is the Snow Wraith which doesn’t just breath fire it has heat vision and can camouflage itself in the snowy landscape.
Fans of the films and previous series will want to make sure they have Netflix for “Dragons: Race To The Edge” to see this chapter in the lives of Hiccup and the gang.
