I was prepared to hate this. Granted, Scooby-Doo! And KISS: Rock And Roll Mystery isn’t a great work of art, nor is it meant to be. This ins’t a film made because there was a story to tell. It was made to make money and cash in on the KISS and Scooby-Doo! fans. And I’m pretty sure that formula weighed heavier in favor of KISS fans when the idea came to fruition. Both brands/franchises have been coasting along mostly on name recognition at this point, and while this is just another way for the two entities to make some money, the story involved is actually pretty good.
And yes, the full (current) lineup of Kiss offer up their vocal talents for their animated counterparts. The voice cast for the Mystery Gang is good, as usual, and there are some fun celebrity cameos which I don’t want to spoil. Interestingly, the KISS characters are not direct counterparts but a sort of fantastical superhero version – yes, the band members have special powers.
In a plot that many might feel is sort of reminiscent of Phantom Of The Park, KISS World has been constructed in honor of the band, and the “big Halloween concert” is going to take place but, as you might expect, something (or someone) has other plans.
While it isn’t animated in a way that will fool anybody into thinking this is a feature film, it isn’t too bad. The budget went into the vocal talent and, well, look, you’re going to pick this up if you’re a fan of KISS or Scooby-Doo! and you won’t be disappointed.
Special features are scant, with a blooper reel, a dumb “Are you a Scooby or a Shaggy” ask the cast type of featurette, and two older television episodes with one featuring a KISS connection.
