Following up on the previous LEGO Super Heroes home video release (Justice League vs. Bizarro League) we get a new adventure featuring computer animated versions of small plastic representations of some of DC’s iconic characters. This time they are going up against not just one or two big foes, but, as the title suggests, the Legion Of Doom. Here we have Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan version) and Cyborg going up against Lex Luthor, Sinestro, Grodd, Black Manta, Captain Cold and Cheetah. Those characters, however, are not the only characters appearing in this film. There are some great cameos here, but I don’t want to spoil it if you haven’t had it spoiled already.
Flash and Green Lantern have a rivalry going for the affection of Wonder Woman, Cyborg is played for comic relief, and while competent, the villains are all taken down for the most part rather easily and with some visual humor. It isn’t much of a spoiler to say that Darkseid is helping the villains with their success, though he is in the background.
At just over an hour and ten minutes there is plenty of time for LEGO Super Heroes – Justice League: Attack Of The Legion Of Doom to tell its story. Of course the heroes are victorious in the end, which you expect, but the fun is in how the story unfolds. Besides the typical LEGO humor we get a decent story that would work in pretty much any medium.
By using the characters and sets with LEGO there is an inherent humor that is allowed to be present. That said, the story and tone are not necessarily inherently juvenile, though there are enough jokes that will make adults groan. This film is highly enjoyable for kids and parents may be able to sit through and watch it with them – at least one time.
Of course the ending sets up what should be the next LEGO Super Heroes movie. I wonder if this is meant to lead into the upcoming LEGO Batman film.
The only special feature is a 20 minute featurette about the sound design – “Click, Zap, Boom! Creating The Sound Design”. I was surprised at how informative and entertaining this featurette is. Not only does it go into how they chose which sounds would be in certain scenes, but a great lesson in what a foley artist is and filmmaking in general.
All told LEGO Super Heroes – Justice League: Attack Of The Legion Of Doom is a worthwhile disc to pick up for young and old alike.
