Honestly, I expected a sequel to My Little Pony Equestria Girls, and we got it, in My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks. What I didn’t expect was how far this offshoot of “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” would go. Now we have My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Friendship Games, the third and most likely not final entry in this semi-theatrical franchise.
I say semi-theatrical because they do wind up with a (very) limited theatrical run for a week in a handful of cities. What started out as a “big” idea as something fun has grown into its own franchise. This just goes to show the power of the current My Little Pony property.
Now with Friendship Games we have the characters returning and they are going up against an unlikely…. no, wait… we’re dealing with My Little Pony. We have flying unicorns and more so is anything unlikely?
No.
If you have not watched the previous two films in the franchise you could be a little lost as to the relationship between the humans and the ponies of two different worlds. While the plot centers on the humans we do still have ties to the ponies from the television series, so the previous films are pretty much required viewing.
Canterlot High is competing in the Frienship Games with their rivals at Crystal Prep. Only thing is, Twilight Sparkle is studying at Crystal Prep. The use of equestrian magic is banned from the games, but somehow somebody cheats and what is supposed to be a friendly rivalry winds up taking some insidious undertones.
Since this is a My Little Pony film you can imagine that everything does work out in the end. Friendship wins out, of course.
The Blu-ray comes with a number of special features starting off with an audio commentary that many of the younger crowd won’t care about, but older fans will. Then there are the online shorts that preceded this film and a few deleted scenes. The snipped bits from the film have audio commentary with information on why they were cut. And a sing-along option.
