“Mummies are the original zombies. Just wrapped up in toilet paper.” – Ciárán
This year was somewhat excruciating with regards to getting the kids costumed up for Halloween. August knew what he wanted, thankfully. He plans on being the 9th Doctor from “Doctor Who” which didn’t take much. We purchased an appropriate Sonic Screwdriver, August has shirt and pants that will work, I need to buzz his head, and the only thing left was the coat, which turned out to be tricky. Turns out the 9th Doctor wears something akin to a vintage World War II German U-Boat Captain’s coat. There are no ready-made costume pieces for this and to get a replication would take a lot longer (not to mention cost) than we have time for. Thankfully we hit paydirt at Goodwill with a coat that will work. While not an exact match, it’s close enough.
Tevye is going to be a bumblebee, a costume that we have had since August was a toddler.
Déla has decided to be Hermione. We have (the correct) books and a bag for her, we can curl her hair or mess it up, but we needed the Griffindor robes. Thankfully Amazon has them and with Amazon Prime, they arrived in plenty of time.
Xavier is still undecided. He is using some of the older costumes we have laying about the house. There is Wolverine, Captain America and somewhere Iron Man as well as a couple of others. He keeps changing his mind at least once a day. While frustrating, it isn’t the biggest issue this year.
Unsurprisingly Ciárán is my problem child this year.
He didn’t have anything he wanted to be for Halloween. Then, when he finally did decide on a costume, it was something very difficult – the Pokemon trainer from the Pokemon Ruby game. No, not a regular Pokemon trainer that could be recognized, but one with a specific shirt, backpack and hat that don’t appear to be, at least to the general populace, any sort of specific character.
On our trip to Goodwill we searched the racks for anything that could be used to convert into the Pokemon Ruby trainer character’s wardrobe without any luck. Heading to another thrift store also yielded no results. August was talking with Ciárán about his costume and convinced him to change what he wanted to be. Now Ciárán wants to be a Jedi. Any Jedi will do. And there was nothing where we were.
Arriving at home we immediately took to Amazon before Ciárán changed his mind. We wound up getting a Luke Skywalker costume, one that looks like what he wore on Tatooine in the first movie. Put a lightsaber in his hand and it’s good enough. The costume arrived the other day, and with just a couple of days to go before Halloween, there’s still enough time for Ciárán to change his mind.
He better not or he could suffer the same fate as Darth Maul.
Then this happened today.
