This past Thursday was the record release party for Brian Saunders’ debut album. I wonder it it should be referred to as his solo debut as he did record with a band, way back when, but I am not sure how much of it was commercially available. Whatever. This album is his project, and I couldn’t be happier for him.
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while then you might remember (though probably not) back in 2010 I mentioned Brian before when he took to the stage for a solo show. Sadly I had not been able to catch him play again until last week. This time he was backed by a full band, all of whom played on his album.
Some of the songs are a bit melancholy, but all are interesting. I was asked to describe his music, and I just couldn’t give a concise description without pulling in a bunch of different descriptors. It might be best to simply let his music speak for itself.
“A Broken Clock”
I am hoping to see Brian play live again. And soon.
Not quite half the set started out with Brian behind the accoustic guitar with Johnny Sangster handling duties on the electric. There was also Dan Walker on keys, Brad Gibson behind the drum kit and Keith Lowe handling bass duties.
I know his first album just came out, but I am hoping he is able to get back into the studio again before too long and record a follow-up.
“The Cradle Robber’s Song”
While I do admit to a certain bias in favor of Brian, there is undeniable quality to his songwriting and delivery.
Congratulations, again, Brian, on getting this record out. It sounds good.
