Justice League Unlimited: The Complete Series (Blu-ray)

justice league unlimited blu“Justice League Unlimited” is a continuation of the “Justice League” series that followed the (rightfully) acclaimed DC animated universe titles featuring Batman, Superman and others. Over the course of 39 episodes we get an expanded roster of heroes entering a series of adventures that saw things get… well, the task was to overturn the apple cart, metaphorically, and that certainly did happen.

After 52 episodes of “Justice League” creators/producers Bruce Timm and Paul Dini expected cancellation, but instead they were given a mandate to create less two-part episodes. So they created a series with a whole mythology of multi-episode story arcs.

And a lot of characters.

Now on Blu-ray through Warner Brothers’ Archive Collection through online retailers fans can get this series along with what appears to be all the previously available special features on three Blu-ray discs. And the series looks great. Filmed (ha) in widescreen, thankfully we are getting a visual upgrade rather than some bastardization to fit modern television screens.

What makes “Justice League Unlimited” so good was that it was not just a continuation of the DC animated universe, but the consequences of characters actions were evident. There were repercussions and character’s behaviors reflected that. It was much more “adult” themed even with romantic interests. Sometimes the personal and the professional didn’t work out – and not just with the characters directly involved.

The ending to the whole of the DC animated universe, we get a satisfying ending to storylines from previous series. There were crossovers throughout, with the final episode of the 2nd season supposedly capping everything off. Then Warner Brothers and Cartoon Network wanted more, and a few more episodes were commissioned with a complete story arc that is obviously inspired by the classic Legion Of Doom from the old “Super Friends” cartoon.

Fans of the DC animated universe absolutely should look into adding this to their collection. It isn’t the place to start, but definitely necessary.
