LEGO has a number of properties that have turned into animated entertainment. Most recently Ninjago is the best example as an ongoing television series. Now the LEGO Friends line is getting in on the action with Girlz 4 Life, a direct-to-video film featuring some of the characters and little else from the toy line.
We get the main girls features in the LEGO Friends line who wind up forming a band with what is to be a sure-fire hit song. Then some pop star and her manager wander in and takes it from them. Alright, so the girls need to take their song back, remain friends, and…. the plot really doesn’t make much sense. There is some fundamental errors in the way the music industry works that form the basis for the plot. Then there is the fact that these young girls are given a heck of a lot of freedom and Independence for their age.
What bothered me most about LEGO Friends: Girlz 4 Life was just how little LEGO was actually featured. As in none. Take away the LEGO Friends in the title and you might not know this was based on the toy line at all. I’m not looking for The LEGO Movie level of brick interaction but at least … I don’t know, use the LEGOs.
Alright, so the plot may be a bit on the pandering side of things, but it isn’t terrible. Yes, it should have (and easily could have) been better, but it’s not terrible. The Blu-ray comes with a DVD copy of the film, a digital copy and some special features. There is a music video by L2M, a new girl (literally) group who have the hit song featured in this film. Then there is a short video of a dance routine by the group, which sort of acts as a second music video. Then there is a bit of a gag reel, dance lesson by L2M, karaoke, and that’s it. Nothing about LEGO Friends, anything about the creative process, the toy line, anything of any substance about L2M, nothing of substance.
LEGO Friends: Girlz 4 Life feels disposable, which is a shame. I had higher hopes for this first video based on the toy line.
