Was this series planned to only have fiveĀ episodes? I think so because what we get is C-3P0 retelling the stories of the previous (to The force Awakens) Star Wars films through his rather biased filter.
Five episodes of “LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales” were broadcast on Disney XD, and my kids loved them. Particularly because Anthony Daniel reprises his role as C-3P0, with Billy Dee Williams showing up (vocally) as Lando. (Tom Kane also voices Yoda, which he didĀ in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”.) Not only is this a new take on Star Wars, but this is LEGO, and if you are at all familiar with previous LEGO Star Wars videos, you know what you are in for – hilarity.
While not canonically correct, you could almost take a version of this and see it as fitting with the the larger Star Wars universe. It is interesting as an adult to see how C-3P0 would present the events of the films. This presents an interesting quandary for parents. All the spoilers are here. These LEGO videos are appropriate for “all ages” though the Star Wars films themselves are not. While we all know Darth Vader is Luke’s father, do you want your kids to know all of the major plot and character points ahead of watching the films?
As with all the LEGO media there are jokes for all ages. That means even parents will enjoy watching this all the way through. It’s a decent way to recap “the story so far” with a bit of fun thrown in. Each episode isn’t just a retelling of previous events, there are frame stories. Some are triggered by characters, others by revisiting familiar locations.
This DVD offers up a fresh take on the Star Wars stories that is most welcome. It may not have the same shelf-life as the films themselves, but it is definitely worth owning for (younger) fans of the franchise.
