Please see my introduction and explanation about this project here.
For this entry I am not using the officially released soundtrack as in the box sets, but instead the Yellow Submarine Songtrack. Because I can. With Help! and Hard Day’s Night being full albums and not the soundtrack albums that Yellow Submarine was, I figured why not use the album version, as it is what I listen to most often anyway. Sort of rushed out to release just after The Beatles (The White Album) it is generally regarded as a much lesser release, but I disagree. At least with this version. And I still need to pick up the soundtrack versions of Hard Day’s Night and Help!
Presented in order from least to most favorite, in a highly subjective (and subject to change) manner:
“Eleanor Rigby”
Have you ever tried playing this on guitar?
“Only a Northern Song”
There are days I like this more, some days less
“It’s All Too Much”
I would have liked to have heard this recorded for Rubber Soul
“Think for Yourself”
I really like the guitar sound here
“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
Some days I like this song even less
“Love You To”
Really good stretching of the instrumentation used
“Nowhere Man”
Shows how the band was beginning to explore philosophy
“With a Little Help from My Friends”
A good song, but I’m tired of it
“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
What a great declaration of where rock and roll was going to go at the time
“Hey Bulldog”
The piano riff made me want to take piano lessons (which never happened)
“When I’m Sixty-Four”
I love the sentiment here
“All You Need Is Love”
This might be the best song in the Beatles catalog
“Yellow Submarine”
How fun is this song?
“All Together Now”
The ultimate sing-along
“Baby, You’re a Rich Man”
Probably my favorite Beatles song
