Please see my introduction and explanation about this project here.
This was one of the more difficult albums to rank because this album is so spectacular. The ranking on this album is the most volotile, depending on my mood when I listen to it, so this entry in particular is the most subjective (and subject to change). Each song is wildly different as the band was stretching the concept of what a rock and roll record could be. Some songs may be weaker but generally this is simply one of the greatest albums of all time for a reason. There really is too much that can be written about this release. I’m just glad I have a copy of the original vinyl with the gatefold sleeve and paper insert. I miss these types of things that we used to get with our records.
Presented in order from least to most favorite, in a highly subjective (and subject to change) manner:
“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
A great song, I’m just tired of hearing it
“With a Little Help from My Friends”
Same with this one
“Within You Without You”
Building on what the band did previously with non-traditional instrumentation
“She’s Leaving Home”
I like how this is a story from a different perspective
“Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”
Some really cool imagery
“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)”
“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
Imagine in 1967 buying this new record and playing it for the first time not knowing what to expect
“Lovely Rita”
I think this is a great companion song to “Penny Lane”
“A Day in the Life”
The middle bit is a sort of rock song, but everything else really isn’t
“Getting Better”
A great sentiment
“Good Morning Good Morning”
A fine way to start the day
“Fixing a Hole”
Simply a fun metaphysical tune
“When I’m Sixty-Four”
Well, will you still love me?
