Please see my introduction and explanation about this project here.
In the United States this album was broken apart into separate releases, including a soundtrack with some of the songs written specifically for the film along with some instrumental score. Some of these other songs would appear on miscellaneous releases. The album, as intended by the band, sees The Beatles moving away from covers (only two this time, their last) and exploring different themes of love, loss and longing, but not the “young love” type of longing, a more of a realization that things were changing, a growing up if you will. Probably their first “grown-up” record.
Presented in order from least to most favorite, in a highly subjective (and subject to change) manner:
“Act Naturally”
How many Carl Perkins song do they need to cover?
“Dizzy Miss Lizzy”
I’d be more interested in Chuck Berry covering this
“It’s Only Love”
You can hedar John sleepwalking through the writing of this
“Tell Me What You See”
A pretty sandard song, though you can hear a bunch of extra instruments, noting where the band would be going soon
“You’re Going to Lose That Girl”
Almost feels like an album too late for this one
“Yesterday”
What is there to say about this one?
“You Like Me Too Much”
An interesting George penned number
“I Need You”
The rhythm on this is interesting
“Ticket to Ride”
I have used this as a lullaby for years
“You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”
John becoming more reflective in his writing
“The Night Before”
It sounds upbeat but the lyrics are dark
“Another Girl”
A fairly standard tuen but quite fun
“Help!”
John becoming more self-aware and reflective
“I’ve Just Seen a Face”
One of my all-time favorite Beatles tracks
