A New Big Neighborhood In Seattle

The Northtwest Folklife Festival has grown since its origins in 1972 from an annual music event held over the Memorial Day weekend into what is now a year-round celebration the various cultures throughout the world. Northwest Folklife is the organization that has grown out of the festival and is responsible for a variety of events.

Newly announced is the Our Big Backyard program, with the first series of events taking place Saturday, April 9 through Friday, April 13 titled Movin’ Around The World. This does coincide with Spring Break for Seattle Public Schools (and I am sure a couple of other school districts). This is important because the program runs every day from 11am to 2:45pm with a larger focus on appealing to kids.

While this can be seen asĀ  “children’s” program, it really is designed for families. Each day will focus on a different region or nation, the listing is as follows:

Saturday, April 7
A Bailar: Dances and Traditions of Mexico
Sunday, April 8
All Across Europe
Monday, April 9
Traditional to Trendy : Dances of India
Tuesday, April 10
Expressions of Asia
Wednesday, April 11
Polynesian Sounds of the Sea
Thursday, April 12
Roots of America
Friday, April 13
Celebration of Africa

Attendees can expect to see folk dances from Hungary, learn Hula dancing, hear music from Zimbabwe, participate in a Hip-Hop dance workshop, and so much more.
