Yesterday was Veteran’s Day.
I should have posted something then about sacrifice and serving your country.
I held off posting about Veteran’s Day until today though because today is when we did something to commemorate and honor those who served and serve.
First, though, I have to declare my unease with categorizing myself as a veteran. It’s not new, and I have blogged about this before a couple of times, so I don’t feel the need to go into detail about that again, but I do feel the need to mention it.
Every year our church honors veteran’s during mass, and almost every year I am asked to be the flag bearer, process in with the flag and along with other veterans get called up to the front to be honored and blessed. Each time I am uneasy standing there with people who have seen combat, or those who had a different experience than I did and were much more willing to serve for the “right” reasons.
So what did we do today?
We got up early and went to place flags on headstones of those who served.
Various Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs participated, so it didn’t take too long, but it certainly felt good to honor those who served our country, either voluntarily or though the draft, during wartime or peace.
Afterwards we went to IHOP, which was running a cross-promotion with the new movie The Grinch, featuring green pancakes. August decided to try them out.
The amount of sugar in them sort of messed him up for the day.
