One of the two songs recorded by Paul, George and Ringo based on one of John’s demo tapes during the Anthology project in 1995 and released as a single. What is astounding to me is that George Martin did not produce this (along with “Free As A Bird”) but Harrison’s friend and fellow Traveling Willbury Jeff Lynne was tapped to sit behind the console as the three surviving Beatles recorded for the first time in 25 years.
I want to like the song more than I do. I mean, I like it, but it’s not one I think of when I think of Beatles singles. It does sound like them, just with a glossy sheen thanks to Jeff Lynne (which is not what the band needed).
Originally a demo of Lennon singing accompanying himself on piano, the song is fleshed out instrumentally but had to undergo some technical wizardry in order to get the timing “corrected” for the other three to play along to it. Of the two songs recorded by The Beatles for Anthology this one had a full set of lyrics.
Maybe it’s that after so many years it would take a little while for the collaborative juices to flow and mesh together. Sadly the group only released two songs so we will never know what could have been. There are some bootlegs of other stuff the three (four if you count Lynne) did during that time if you want to search them out.
The song was remixed for the compilation 1+ a couple of years ago. I need to pick that up as it offers up a few distinct differences from this version.
As you are reading this I am in Boston. Again.
This will be my 4th time attending the Hometown Throwdown. Yes, Laura let me out of the house on my own for a few days.
To go see this band that I have seen a gajillion times already.
That’s some real love right there.
