The other new song recorded by Paul, Ringo and George based off of a demo from John for Antholgy, this was the band’s first single (of new material) in over two decades.
Of course it was a hit.
This demo was less complete than “Real Love” which meant the others had much more work to do on it. Of the two newly recorded songs for Anthology this one feels much more like a Beatles track.
What I don’t like about “Free As A Bird” is that it feels a bit more plodding and should be at a slightly faster tempo.
Last night was the 2nd night of three for the Hometown Throwdown, the annual celebration by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Oh, it was a good concert with the band in high energy and Dickie’s voice holding up well.
And something happened that completely threw me.
The band didn’t play “Someday I Suppose”.
I mean, this is one of two songs you actually expect them to play (the other being “The Impression That I Get”). It was the first song of theirs to get heavy airplay and could be considered their first hit.
Can you imagine The Rolling Stones not playing “Satisfaction”?
The sets for this year’s Hometown Throwdown have been smaller than in years past, so obviously some cuts are being made, and with a new album, you can expect some of the older songs to go in favor of the newer material.
Still, that song is one of the few you absolutely expect to hear them play live.
I guess they are feeling free as a bird to do what they want.
