This session of this series is going to focus solely on Cub Scout Winter Camp, which Xavier and I attended last weekend.
Unfortunately there was no snow, but, at least it was dry. There have been years when we have gone and it has been pouring rain the whole weekend. Sure, we were disappointed, but ultimately it was a fun weekend.
Driving down later than we usually do on Friday night we got there and checked in just before the leader’s meeting to go over stuff specific to the weekend, the schedule, etc. Waking up Saturday morning we got going with breakfast, flag ceremony then headed over to the ranges. This year both archery and BB gun ranges were operational the whole time (some years one or the other is closed, or one is open in the morning and the other open in the afternoon) so that opened up the available offerings.
We would go back to the archery range a couple of times. It is probably Xavier’s favorite thing about Cub Scouts.
Actually, we went back to the archery range in the afternoon, but I’ll just consolidate and post all of that here. What was interesting was he never gave up despite being discouraged by his arrows bouncing off these targets. If you’ve looked at previous posts about Xavier doing archer at Cub Scout camps then you know he was pulling the arrow back far enough, it was, really, the type of targets being used.
After lunch the program got a bit busier. There was a fire starting demonstration which we didn’t really participate in, but certainly did benefit from.
One of the blocks of time was specifically set up for tasks based on their rank. Here is Xavier with one of his den-mates working on some compass bearings.
Then there was time for getting back onto the ranges.
Dinner, campfire, another night’s sleep, then breakfast, and packing up before hitting the road back home. While disappointing with the lack of snow it was still a successful and enjoyable weekend.
